Have you ever just looked at a door, you know the plain everyday kind you walk through a million times a day, and thought to yourself this flat surface, which is currently butt ugly, has so much potential as a canvas?!!!!! Now, I realize that I on occasionally have been known to get a little carried away with wanting to paint EVERYTHING, but seriously this door needed it. We bought the place just over two years ago and have been doing tons of, much needed, repairs, and quit honestly the doors never really made it to the list of things needing to be done. However, it has been driving me nuts because this particular door is REALLY ugly. So I went ahead and did a thing….yes, I painted it. I even went as far as to use it as my guinea pig for a smorgasbord of chalk paint I had picked up. At first I wasn’t completely sure which direction I wanted to go. By the way, Pinterest is a black hole! I perused so many amazing images of doors from around the world I seriously thought about going hog wild on ALL the doors of the house; not sure that would have gone over so well with the hubs though. So I went ahead and just started putting color down with the plans of blending it and having a REALLY colorful door.
I added a base layer of paint, a very colorful layer, then added another layer that I blended together more. Tried to make the second layer larger blocks of blended color so viewers didn’t get dizzy. It is really hard to see in the pictures, but the original bases was blended in such a way the colors pop through and it was amazing! Well, at least I think so. Could tell it was a little too much without something to ground the colors and needed to tie in with the decor of the main house; after all this is an Alaskan Bed and Breakfast. Hubby wanted some of my infamous birch trees to solidify the door and I agreed it would make everything look AMAZING!. So I did another thing.
Drawing in a few of the indigenous plants from the area, more layers of color…it just keeps getting better and better. In fact, I am having a really hard time not going downstairs and staring out it forever! The chalk paint is taking a little getting use to; not used to paint drying a duller color than when it’s applied. The consistency is resembles a ceramic glaze, thick yet liquid, like a heavy whipping cream. Will definitely use again, totally loving the no odor side of it. Seriously, there are no fumes! I can not smell anything unless I put my nose within an inch of the jars! Perfect for anyone sensitive to paint fumes. So of course, once more I want to paint every door around here. Restraint is needed, too many things to do.
